It was 21 years ago today…

Monday, April 19th, 2010

On the 19th of April 1989, four days after 94 (which eventually rose to 96) Liverpool supporters lost their lives at Hillsborough, Kelvin MacKenzie (editor) and The Sun newspaper printed the following headline:

“The Truth.
Some fans picked pockets of victims
Some fans urinated on the brave cops
Some fans beat up PC giving kiss of life.”

While families of the bereaved and survivors of the disaster were still coming to terms with what happened four days earlier, they were hit with another blow, they were being blamed for killing their own.

It was all of course a pack of lies, printed for the sole reason of selling more papers. Evidently, with a 21 year-strong boycott of the newspaper on Merseyside, it has had the opposite effect. Despite thinly veiled-so called ’apologies’ from the rag many years after MacKenzie had left, the boycott has stood strong and has been justified after the following quote from him:

“I only apologised because Rupert Murdoch told me to. I wasn’t sorry then and I’m not sorry now because we told the truth.”

Although the boycott is strong, there are still a number of Liverpool supporters who still buy The Sun, hopefully this website will go some way in educating them.

Here’s a video to mark the 21 year-strong boycott:

Welcome to dontbuythesun.co.uk

The main aims of the site are:

- Educational: To provide accurate information alongside peoples views of The Sun.

- Campaigning: To present a body of evidence to persuade uneducated Liverpool supporters to join the boycott, and to ensure current boycotters hold firm.

- Visible: To provide act as a high profile website, by attaining high ranking search engine positions for relevant searches by both Liverpool supporters and the wider population. By utilising a relevant domain name, it also provides the opportunity for people to refer to it offline too, should they wish.

- Inclusive: The site does not own or run the boycott, nor does it wish to. We simply identified a benefit and “need” for this site, and rather than thinking “Somebody should…” decided “We will…” Therefore, we would love for other people to get involved with ideas, submit content for inclusion etc.

So, bookmark the site, tell your friends about it, spread the message on social networking sites, print out flyers, visit the links, pick up some stickers/badges from the HJC shop, do what ever you can to help raise awarness of the boycott to Liverpool supporters, Football supporters, EVERYONE.
